Jeremiah’s Lament
In Sunday’s first reading from Jeremiah, we hear his lament.
Jeremiah is a prophet. Prophets do not tell the future; rather, they speak truth to power. Jeremiah is faithful to his calling, yet he does not see any success. He is persecuted by the power structures of his time, and he is mocked by his people. Yet in his actions, in his heart, and in his mind, he remains faithful to the mission God gave him to accomplish.
While he is discouraged for the moment, Jeremiah’s lament ends with a confession of faith: God will act, truth will be victorious, and good will triumph.
The Lesson for Us
The lesson from this reading is that doing what God requires can be difficult. One’s steadfast faithfulness to integrity and truth can be trying, especially when it seems that crime is succeeding. If you ever feel this way, the thing to remember is that in the end, God wins.
Justice and truth may seem delayed, but our faith tells us that goodness wins the day.
Consolation in the Psalm
Take consolation in today’s Psalm: “See, you lowly ones, and be glad; you who seek God, may your hearts revive! For the Lord hears the poor, and his own he spurns not.”
